Scripture Prayers for the Physical Deliverance of Captives

These prayers have now been updated and split into two separate posts: Prayers for the Physical Deliverance of Captives and Prayers for Restoration.  Please refer to this page for more info.
Sometimes we are praying for the physical deliverance of specific individuals that we have heard about or know about or have gotten to know.  In situations where discretion is necessary or I don’t know the specific name of the person or people I’m praying for, I will often ask God to give me a name to pray.  While this makes it more personal, I also find that the meaning of a name that God gives to me for someone is often very significant and something that He is speaking over them.  This also works for times when you don’t even know about a specific situation or person that needs physical deliverance, but you feel impressed to pray.  Don’t be afraid to ask God for a name.  Some might worry that this is not right since trafficking victims have had everything taken from them, often including their names.  I was given many names myself, however I have found that even in that travesty, God was at work, as I began to look up the meanings of the names that had been given to me by my captors.  Together they created a beautiful, whole picture of what God was speaking over me even while I was being tortured and crushed by my captors, lending beautiful insight into His presence and heart for me in those places.  I’m sure my captors thought nothing of the name choices, but God has been gracious to me in showing me His hand on me during those awful years through the meanings of the names I was given.  It reminds me of Isaiah 62:
For Zion’s sake I will not hold My peace,
And for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest,
Until her righteousness goes forth as brightness,
And her salvation as a lamp that burns.
The Gentiles shall see your righteousness,
And all kings your glory.
You shall be called by a new name,
Which the mouth of the Lord will name.
You shall also be a crown of glory
In the hand of the Lord,
And a royal diadem
In the hand of your God.
You shall no longer be termed Forsaken,
Nor shall your land any more be termed Desolate;
But you shall be called Hephzibah,[a] and your land Beulah;[b]
For the Lord delights in you,
And your land shall be married.
And also of Rev. 2:17 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it.’
God is going to give us a new name.  Do not be afraid to ask Him for a name when you don’t know the name of someone you are praying for!

Oh God, we ask permission to enter your heavenly court room by the blood of Jesus Christ, your Son and our advocate. We stand before you today and petition for the lives and the deliverance of _____________. According to Psalm 89:14, righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne, and Your love and Your faithfulness go before you. You are the One Who avenges blood and you remember. You do not ignore the cry of the afflicted. (Ps 9:12) You are known by your justice (Ps. 9:16), so we stand before your throne today and ask that You would ARISE Lord, and let not men triumph, for the very nations are judged in your presence. Strike these captors with terror and let them know today that they are but men. (Ps.9:19-20)

God, your Word states that he who sacrifices thank offerings honors you and prepares the way so that You may show him the salvation of God. (Ps.50:23) So, today, Father, we stand before You and offer our thanks to You for your unfailing love towards us and those whose freedom we seek today. For you are the Mighty One, God, the Lord, who speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to the place where it sets. From Zion, perfect in beauty, You shine forth, O God. You word says that You will come and will not be silent, for a fire devours before you and around you a tempest rages. You summon the heavens above and the earth, that You may judge your people. (Ps.50:1-4) So we stand before You today, with hearts full of thanksgiving for Your love, Your mercy, Your justice, Your perfection in beauty, Your righteousness and Your salvation. We call upon You today in this day of trouble on behalf of ______, to deliver her, that she might honor You. (Ps.50:14-15) We trust today in your unfailing love for ever and ever. We praise you forever for what you have done; in your Name we will hope, for your Name is good. (Ps.52:8-9)

For in their arrogance these wicked men have hunted down the weak. Their mouths are full of curses and lies and threats; trouble and evil are under their tongues. They lie in wait near the villages; from ambush they murder the innocent, watching in secret for their victims. Like a lion in cover, they wait to catch the helpless to drag them off in their nets. Their victims are crushed and collapse, they fall under their strength. The wicked say to themselves, “God has forgotten; He covers His face and never sees!” Arise, Lord! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless. For these wicked men revile you. They say to themselves that You will never call them to account. But You, O God, do see trouble and grief; You consider it to take it in hand. The victims can commit themselves to You, for you are the helper of these fatherless ones. Break the arms of the wicked and evil men; call them to account for their wickedness that they thought would never be found out. For You HEAR, O Lord, the DESIRE of the afflicted; You encourage them and you listen to their cries, vindicating the fatherless and the oppressed, that man, who is of the earth, may terrify no more. (Psalm 10) God, you hear the desire of the afflicted, those whose hearts don’t even know you, whose hope has run out, whose voices have been silenced – those who are unable to physically cry out to You. You still hear their desire. Today hear the desire of _______ – listen to her cry and vindicate her. For according to Your Word, you do not ignore the cry of the afflicted.

Because of the oppression of this one who is weak, and the groaning of the needy, we petition you now to ARISE, O God, and set her in the safety for which she longs. (Ps. 12:5)

Arise, O Lord, in your anger; rise up against the rage of ______’s enemies. Awake, O God, and decree Your justice. For you are a righteous God, who searches minds and hearts; bring an end to the violence of these wicked ones who are holding __________ in their captivity. For You, O God are a righteous Judge, a God who expresses your wrath every day. Do not relent. Sharpen Your sword; bend the string of Your bow. Prepare your deadly weapons and make ready Your flaming arrows. For he who is pregnant with evil conceives trouble and gives birth to disillusionment. God these ones who are holding __________ in their captivity, let them dig a hole and scoop it out and fall into the pits they have made. Let the trouble they have caused for _________ recoil on themselves, their own violence come down upon their own heads. We will give thanks to You, O Lord, because of Your righteousness and will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High. (Psalm 7)

Free _____ from the trap that was set for her…..redeem her, O Lord, for you are the God of truth. You see her affliction and you know the anguish of her soul. Do not hand her over to her enemies, but deliver her today, set her feet in a spacious place and let her be glad and rejoice in your love (v.4-8) Father, we petition You today in the courts of heaven to be merciful to ______, for she is in distress, her eyes are weak with sorrow and her soul and body with grief. Her life is consumed by anguish and her years by groaning. Her strength has failed because of her captivity to the afflictions of men. Because of her enemies, she has become the contempt of neighbors and a dread to friends. She has been forgotten by them as though dead, and has become like broken pottery. She hears the slander of many and there is terror on every side of her; the evil ones have conspired against her and plotted her destruction. But You have not forgotten her. Arise O God, and shine Your face upon her. SAVE HER in your unfailing love. Let her not be put to shame, but let her know your goodness, which You have stored up for those who take refuge in You. Hide her in the shelter of your presence. She is a besieged city and she feels cut off from You. Show Your wonderful love to her today, Father, and deliver her. (Ps. 31)

O Lord, how long will You look on? Rescue her life from their ravages, her precious life from these lions. Free her to praise You among the peoples. God you know that we ask for not only a physical deliverance for __________, but also we ask as Moses did, that you would set _______ free that she might praise Your name. We are asking for a full deliverance, not just physically, but a spiritual deliverance as well that she would spend an eternity with You, praising Your name among Your people. (Ps. 35:17-18)

Do not withhold your mercy from her, O Lord; may your love and truth protect her, for troubles without number surround her; sin has overtaken her, and she cannot see. They are more than the hairs of her head, and her heart fails within her. Be pleased, O Lord, to save her; O Lord, come quickly to help her. May all who seek to take her life be put to shame and confusion; may all who desire her ruin be turned back in disgrace. May those who say to her, “Aha! Aha!” be appalled at their own shame. She is poor and needy; O Lord, think of her. For You are her help and deliverer; O God, do not delay!” (Ps. 40: 11-17)

Psalm 72:4, 12-14 – You bring justice to the poor of the people; You will save the children of the needy, and will break in pieces the oppressor…for You say You will deliver the needy when she cries, the poor also, and she who has no helper. God, spare the poor and needy, and save _____’s soul. Redeem her life from oppression and violence; and precious will be her blood in Your sight.” God, you have seen it all. Every violent act done to her, and every violent act required of her and forced upon her. You see her oppression day and night, and you see that in her tears, she has no one to help her. Rise, O Lord, and spare her, save her soul, redeem her life from oppression and violence, because every tear shed, and every single drop of blood from her broken body has been precious to you, and not forgotten.

Psalm 71:13 – Let them be confounded and consumed who are adversaries of _____’s life; let them be covered with reproach and dishonor who seek her hurt.” Turn her enemies back upon each other. Expose them and bring them to dishonor, that those who seek her hurt would be no more.

Psalm 69:33 – For the Lord hears the poor, and does not despise His prisoners.” God you see _____ in her imprisonment, even though she remains invisible to those around her. You hear her cries, even when her voice is gone and her heart alone cries out lonely cries to you. You do not despise her in her captivity, but instead, you are full of compassion towards her. Hear her cries, Lord, and lead her all the way out of her captivity.

Psalm 68:8b says that You have led captivity captive…” God, take _____’s captors captive, and deliver her into freedom today.

Psalm 59:1-2, 13 – Deliver _____ from her enemies, O my God; defend her from those who rise up against her. Deliver her from the workers of iniquity, and save her from bloodthirsty men…Consume them in wrath, consume them, that they may not be; and let them know that God rules in Jacob to the ends of the earth.”

Psalm 58:6-7 – Break their teeth in their mouth, O God! Break out the fangs of the young lions, O Lord! Let them flow away as waters which run continually; when he bends his bow, let his arrows be as if cut in pieces.”

Psalm 46:1-2, 5 – God, be ____’s refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, may she not fear, even though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea…God, you are in the midst of her, she shall not be moved; God, help her, just at the break of dawn.”

Psalm 40:5, 17 – Many, O Lord my God, are Your wonderful works which You have done; and Your thoughts toward us cannot be recounted to You in order; If I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered…But _____ is poor and needy; yet You, Lord, think upon her. You are her help and her deliverer; do not delay, O my God.”

Psalm 35:1-8, 26 – Plead ____’s cause, O Lord, with those who strive with her; fight against those who fight against her. Take hold of shield and buckler, and stand up for her help. Also draw out the spear, and stop those who pursue her. Say to her soul, “I am your salvation.” Let those be put to shame and brought to dishonor who seek after her life; let those be turned back and brought to confusion who plot her hurt. Let them be like chaff before the wind, and let the angel of the Lord chase them. Let their way be dark and slippery, and let the angel of the Lord pursue them. For without cause they have hidden their net for her in a pit, which they have dug without cause for her life. Let destruction come upon them unexpectedly, and let their nets that they have hidden catch themselves; into that very destruction let them fall…Let them be ashamed and brought to mutual confusion who rejoice at her hurt; let them be clothed with shame and dishonor who exalt themselves against her.”

Ps. 18:4-6, 16-19 – The cords of death have entangled _____; the torrents of destruction have overwhelmed her; the snares of death have confronted her. In her distress, let her heart cry out to you, Lord for your help. From your temple, hear her voice. May her cry reach your ears. Reach down, O Lord, from on high and take hold of her; draw her out of deep waters. Rescue her from her powerful enemy, from her foes, who are too strong for her. They confront her in the day of her disaster, but you O Lord, are _____’s support. Bring her out into a spacious place; rescue her because you delight in her.”

Ps. 25:16, 20 – Turn to _____ and be gracious to her, for she is lonely and afflicted. Guard her life and rescue her; let her not be put to shame. May she find her refuge in You.”

From Psalm 27 – Though her father and mother may have forsaken _____, you, Lord, promise to receive her. Teach her your way, O Lord, and lead her in a straight path because of her oppressors. Do not turn her over to the desire of her foes, for false witnesses rise against her, breathing out violence. May she instead see your goodness, O Lord, here, in the land of the living. Strengthen her heart to wait for you.

Ps. 32:7 – Be her hiding place, God. Protect her from trouble, and surround her with songs of deliverance.”

    From Psalm 3
Lord! There are so many oppressing ___________! So many rise up against her! They sneer, “There is no help for you in God.”
She cries with her voice, and sometimes even without a voice, and You have said that You hear her. Arise! Save her, O God! Rescue her from the hoard who have set themselves all around her!
O Jehovah God, may ________ know You as a shield and protector. May she experience glory as you lift up her head. Punch her enemies in the face, and break their jaw, O Lord.

    From Psalm 4
Pay attention to us when we call to you, O righteous God! You have opened up a tight place for rescue in the past, do it now! Show kindness to us, and listen to our prayers for ___________!
O you men, for so long you have exchanged the weight of glory for the shame that you try to cast on ___________. For so long you have loved wickedness and chased after lies. But know this: Jehovah will listen when we call out to Him.
O, righteous Lord, lift the light of Your face on ____________. May she know in her whole being what it means for You to have rescued her and brought her to a place of safety. May she truly have sweet sleep, in peaceful shalom.

  2. Rebecca says:

I have prayed through all these prayers (and added my own) this evening during the superbowl, which makes them seem especially significant to me. Thank you so much for posting these.
